Plein Air

Plein Air is French for “open air”. It is a style of painting that involves going to the same location and working as fast as possible within a window of time. The style is related to the sometimes rushed nature of the process, but also includes the artist’s personal flair and interpretation of color. These paintings are always painted in oils simply because a longer drying time is required when you are out in the elements. To many people now, Plein Air refers more to the style of painting than the act of painting on location. However, it is a discipline that many artists enjoy keeping alive. DeHart loves capturing a landscape in this style and spending the time outdoors painting a scene.
